Hey, I am computer illiterate, so... I want to make VLC my default player but I can't select it in windows?

Wondering how to make this change. Also have slow system and trouble getting randomly shut down. Think b/c of files that may have been dowloaded onto my heard drive. Movies, I mean. Can I find them and get rid of them and protect the computer going forwrad? Thanks!
