What do you clean a fishtank with?

last year when my goldfish died, i cleaned the tank but i forget what i cleaned it wiht. now im getting a beta fish and before i gte it, i want to re-clean the tank, but i dont really know what to clean it with. i dont wnat to hurt the fish so knowing what not to clean it with would be helpful too. thanks! :)
