Why did cesar Chavez go on his hunger strike in 1968?

There was a five-year strike in California in the mid-60's by table-g workers. In 1968 Chavez went on a 25-day fast in order to avert violence in this particular strike and bring additional attention to the issue. He was very influential in organizing farm labourers in California and improving their conditions.
